Great Smoky Mountains National ParkGreat Smoky Mountains National Park worked with East Tennessee Clean Fuels and the Land of Sky Clean Vehicles Coalition to shift to domestic fuels and advanced vehicle technologies. In 2013, the park replaced three gasoline pickup trucks with all-electric vehicles, converted five gasoline mowers to operate on propane, and installed four publicly accessible electric vehicle charging stations. In 2015, the park added four propane pickup trucks and installed two propane refueling stations. These activities are estimated to help the park reduce its annual emissions by almost 40 million tons of CO2 and displace the use of nearly 8,900 gasoline-gallon equivalents of petroleum per year. A resource package will be developed to help ensure that partners feel comfortable approaching their key stakeholders. Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicle Demonstrations for Freight and Mobility SolutionsWhile adoption of light-duty electric vehicles (EVs) has increased and more models have become commercially available, medium-duty (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) EVs have not seen the same widespread success. MD and HD EVs offer tremendous potential economic benefits to fleets and wider energy and environmental benefits to communities. This project confronts that disparity to highlight the importance and uses of MD and HD EVs. Clean Fuels Ohio designed this project to prove the operational and financial effectiveness of MD and HD EVs in fleets and communities that had not previously used this technology. Through diverse partnerships, the project utilizes commercially available EVs, electric vehicle supply equipment, facilities, and app platforms to ensure seamless technology deployment and showcase significant return on investment. As part of this project, Clean Fuels Ohio and partners operate three demonstration projects of MD and HD EVs with the goal of leading to Class 4–8 EV adoption in various fleet applications across the country. Heavy-Duty Natural Gas Drayage Truck Replacement ProgramThe South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Heavy-Duty Natural Gas Drayage Truck Replacement Program addressed a significant need to reduce diesel emissions and associated public health risks from goods movement at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. The two Ports, located adjacent to one another, constitute America’s largest port complex and are ranked among the busiest container ports in the world. This project replaced 219 older, heavy-duty diesel trucks servicing the Ports or other goods movement operations in the region with new natural gas trucks powered by ultra-clean natural gas engines. Helping Rural Counties Transition to Cleaner Fuels and VehiclesThe objective of the Helping Rural Counties Transition to Cleaner Fuels and Vehicles project is to create models for effectively transferring advanced clean fuel and vehicle technologies to underserved county governments and rural communities and to share those models and lessons learned through a nationally distributed Replication Playbook. Rural county governments often lack the staff capacity to learn about new technologies, implement new training and maintenance systems, and educate their workforces. The lack of funding and financing options, combined with staff capacity to research and pursue existing incentives, can also be a significant barrier to exploring alternative fuels and advanced technology vehicles. Transportation Energy Partners is coordinating and supporting Clean Cities coalitions in eight states as they work with rural county leaders to overcome these and other barriers and find models that work for increasing adoption of cleaner fuels and vehicles. Holistic and Energy-Efficient Rural County Mobility Platform (RAMP)Rural America, representing 97% of the U.S. land area, is home to 15% of the total U.S. population. Rural trips for commuting, shopping, health care, and community-based services have become increasingly longer in the past few decades. The project develops a holistic approach to address the mobility challenges in Greene County, a typical rural county in Southwestern Pennsylvania bordering West Virginia, and this approach can be replicable to all rural counties in the United States. Key to this is developing a capability that does not now exist in the United States, namely a "Rural County Mobility Platform" (RAMP) consisting of both an online platform and phone-based system for trip reservations, structured shuttle services, volunteer management, volunteer-request matching, and mobility information dissemination. This project helps in developing methods and algorithms to pilot a new hybrid service consisting of two complementary components: a volunteer-based ridesharing system and a highly structured shuttle service (not a typical fixed route, with flag stops). It also includes a new capability for more efficient data-driven operations of the existing Greene County Transportation Program and Waynesburg University shuttle services. Ultimately, the project will improve the overall energy efficiency of the local transportation system in meeting rural transportation needs. Houston to Los Angeles (H2LA) - Interstate 10 (I-10) Hydrogen Corridor PlanThe objective of the project is to build agent-based models and acquire relevant vehicle, fueling infrastructure, and operational data to establish a hydrogen fueling and heavy-duty freight truck network leveraging this fueling infrastructure in the Texas Triangle and I-10 corridor from Houston to Los Angeles, CA. The models will be refined for the regional specific analysis and results from earlier efforts by considering the scalability challenges associated with the deployment of a hydrogen freight transport eco-system. Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts will be performed throughout to positively affect the local communities and provide critical inputs to the models. The project will combine the theoretical model results with practical experience in partnership with local community input to provide realistic, equitable, investable, and useable plans for the development of hydrogen infrastructure needed to support commercial heavy-duty (HD) truck freight mobility. Hybrid Electric School Buses Provide New Horsepower for KentuckyThe Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) incorporated hybrid electric technology as a specification in the bus procurement process available to all 174 school districts in the state. This effort resulted in the purchase of 157 hybrid electric school buses over the course of this project. In addition, the project supported education and outreach targeting the general public, teachers, local officials, first responders, local media, and others.
