UPS Unveils First Extended Range Fuel Cell Electricity Delivery Vehicle

Atlanta, GA — UPS announced it will deploy a prototype extended range Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) in its Rolling Laboratory fleet of alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles. UPS is working with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and other partners to design a first-of-its-kind, zero tailpipe emissions, Class 6 medium-duty delivery truck that meets the same route and range requirements of UPS's existing conventional fuel vehicles.

Unlike fuel cell auxiliary power units, this vehicle will use the onboard fuel cell to generate electricity to propel the vehicle. This project is an important step toward demonstrating the commercial viability of zero tailpipe emissions trucks to fleet operators and the developing FCEV supply chain.

The first FCEV prototype will be deployed in Sacramento, Calif., where UPS will validate its design and core performance requirements by testing it on the street starting the third quarter of 2017. Current project plans call for additional UPS trucks to be validated with at least 5,000 hours of in-service operational performance. All of the trucks will be deployed in California due to that state’s ongoing investment in zero tailpipe emissions transportation and installment of hydrogen fueling stations around the state.

“The challenge we face with fuel cell technology is to ensure the design can meet the unique operational demands of our delivery vehicles on a commercial scale,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president global engineering and sustainability. “This project is an essential step to test the zero tailpipe emissions technology and vehicle on the road for UPS and the transportation industry. We have a long history of developing and promoting the use of more sustainable alternative fuels with our Rolling Laboratory, and hope that by bringing our unique expertise to the development of hydrogen fuels, we can help advance the technology.”

The project is part of a fuel cell project grant awarded by DOE in 2013 focused on verifying the proof of concept in commercial delivery vehicles. UPS is committed to evaluating these technologies that support the nation’s energy security, fuel diversity, and economic growth priorities. The project calls for retrofitting conventional fuel trucks with fuel cell electric systems designed specifically for use in a delivery truck duty cycle. UPS is partnering with the Center for Transportation and the Environment as well as Unique Electric Solutions LLC and the University of Texas’ Center for Electromechanics.

UPS Invests more than $90 Million in Natural Gas Vehicles and Infrastructure

Atlanta, GA – UPS announced plans to build an additional six compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations and add 390 new CNG tractors and terminal trucks and 50 liquefied natural gas (LNG) vehicles to its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet. UPS further cements its leadership in the alternative fuel market while continuing to reduce its environmental footprint with this more than $90 million investment in natural gas.

"With more than 4,400 natural gas vehicles and a network of fueling stations, UPS has had great results using natural gas as an alternative fuel in our fleet," said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability. "We know the importance of investing in natural gas globally for our fleet and the alternative fuel market. In 2016, we used more than 61 million gallons of natural gas in our ground fleet, which included 4.6 million gallons of natural gas. This helped us to avoid the use of conventional gas and diesel, and decreased CO2 emissions by 100,000 metric tons."

The six new CNG stations will be built in Ontario, Calif.; Orlando, Fla.; Salina, Kan.; Louisville, Ky.; Greensboro, N.C.; and Vancouver, B.C. Renewable natural gas (RNG) will be used at the station in Ontario to fuel UPS vehicles in the area with renewable compressed natural gas (RCNG).

UPS Tests Residential Delivery Via Drone Launched From atop Package Car

Lithia, Fla. – UPS announced that it has successfully tested a drone that launches from the top of a UPS package car, autonomously delivers a package to a home, and then returns to the vehicle while the delivery driver continues along the route to make a separate delivery.

UPS conducted the test on Monday in Lithia, Fla. with Workhorse Group, an Ohio-based battery-electric truck and drone developer. Workhorse built the drone and the electric UPS package car used in the test.

“This test is different than anything we’ve done with drones so far. It has implications for future deliveries, especially in rural locations where our package cars often have to travel miles to make a single delivery,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president of global engineering and sustainability. “Imagine a triangular delivery route where the stops are miles apart by road. Sending a drone from a package car to make just one of those deliveries can reduce costly miles driven. This is a big step toward bolstering efficiency in our network and reducing our emissions at the same time.”

With ORION, UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization Navigation routing software, a reduction of just one mile per driver per day over one year can save UPS up to $50 million. UPS has about 66,000 delivery drivers on the road each day. Rural delivery routes are the most expensive to serve due to the time and vehicle expenses required to complete each delivery. In this test, the drone made one delivery while the driver continued down the road to make another. This is a possible role UPS envisions for drones in the future.

“Drivers are the face of our company, and that won’t change,” Wallace said. “What’s exciting is the potential for drones to aid drivers at various points along their routes, helping them save time and deliver on increasing customer service needs that stem from the growth of e-commerce.”

The drone used in Monday’s test was the Workhorse HorseFly™ UAV Delivery system. It is a high-efficiency, octocopter delivery drone that is fully integrated with Workhorse’s line of electric/hybrid delivery trucks. The drone docks on the roof of the delivery truck. A cage suspended beneath the drone, extends through a hatch into the truck. A UPS driver inside loads a package into the cage and presses a button on a touch screen, sending the drone on a preset autonomous route to an address. The battery-powered HorseFly drone recharges while it’s docked. It has a 30-minute flight time and can carry a package weighing up to 10 pounds.

For this test, Workhorse preset the route for the drone. But in the future, routes could be determined by UPS’s On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation (ORION), which is the company’s proprietary routing software.

UPS Adds 200 Hybrid Electric Vehicles To Alternative Fuel Fleet

Atlanta, GA – UPS today announced it plans to add 200 new hybrid electric delivery trucks to the company’s growing alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet. The vehicles have the same 2-cylinder engine and E-GENTM chassis as the 125 vehicles UPS announced earlier this year.

Equipped with lithium ion batteries and a range extender engine, these trucks will deliver significant fuel economy equivalency gains, approximately four times the fuel economy of a gasoline powered vehicle. A cloud-based, real time telematics performance monitoring system provides feedback for energy monitoring and route efficiency. The trucks, manufactured by Workhorse Group, Inc., will be deployed beginning in January 2017 starting in Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida, and, possibly in other states as well.

“The improvements in these new package cars came from real-world experience in our alternative fuel Rolling Laboratory, which earlier this year hit a 1 billion miles driven milestone,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president global engineering and sustainability. “We are committed to developing alternative fuel vehicles that lessen our impact on the environment and reliance on petroleum based fuels – that effort is helping to transform markets and communities.”

UPS operates one of the largest alternative fuel and advanced technology fleets in the U.S. In addition to hybrid electric vehicles, the company’s fleet includes all-electric, hydraulic hybrid, compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), propane and light-weight fuel-saving composite body vehicles. In addition to its use of alternative vehicles, UPS uses millions of gallons of lower carbon footprint renewable diesel and renewable natural gas (RNG) in its fleet each year.

Using its “Rolling Laboratory” approach, UPS deploys more than 7,200 low-emission vehicles and achieved its goal of driving 1 billion miles with the alternative fuel fleet in August 2016.

UPS Drives 1 Billion Cleaner Miles Meeting Goal Early

Atlanta, GA – UPS today announced the company has achieved its goal of driving 1 billion miles in its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet one year earlier than planned, and marked more than 10 years of learning from its “Rolling Laboratory.” UPS’s long-term commitment to sustainability is transforming commercial transportation and logistics, spurring growth in the clean fuels market and powering critical engineering advances. The company’s wider sustainability progress is detailed in the 14th annual Sustainability Report, released today.

“We had a big sustainability goal as we set out to make the most of our rolling laboratory by driving 1 billion clean miles in alternative fuel vehicles – that’s the equivalent of well over 4,000 trips to the moon,” said David Abney, Chairman and CEO, UPS. “While attaining this goal is new, our commitment to seeking out alternative fuels actually dates back to the 1930s when UPS tested electric vehicles. With more than 100,000 drivers logging more than 3 billion miles per year, our future depends on our ability to meet the growing demand for global trade while reducing our impact on the environment.”

UPS deepened its commitment to alternative fuels in 2012, when it set the goal of reaching 1 billion miles driven with alternative fuels by the end of 2017. Shattering that goal one year early, about 12 percent of the conventional diesel and gasoline fuel previously used by UPS’s ground fleet is now being replaced by alternative fuels including renewable natural gas and renewable diesel.

“The question wasn’t should we make alternative fuels work?” said Mike Whitlatch, UPS’s vice president of global energy and procurement. “Instead, it was ’What’s the best way to make alternative fuels work for UPS, and for the environment?’ After more than a decade of focus, we are now driving more than 1 million miles globally each business day in our alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet.”

Recognizing alternative fuels and advanced technologies each have unique advantages depending on the routes and geographies in which they are used, UPS deploys the more than 7,200 vehicles in the Rolling Lab to determine what works best in each situation. From old-fashioned pedal power and electric-assisted bicycles in dense urban areas like London and Hamburg to electric and hybrid electric vehicles in the U.S., and natural gas, renewable natural gas and propane globally, UPS is putting sustainability innovation into action, all over the world.

“Many congested cities around the world are implementing zero tailpipe emissions zones, and UPS is keeping ahead of the curve by investing in advanced technologies and creating the commercial delivery fleet of the future,” said Abney.

By the end of 2016, UPS will have invested more than $750 million in alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles and fueling stations globally since 2009. That continued investment, combined with supportive government policies, and a collaborative set of partners has helped to expand development and utilization of alternative fuels, vehicles and infrastructure throughout the world.

UPS Expands CNG Operations At San Antonio Facility

SAN ANTONIO – UPS announced the expansion of its building in San Antonio. The expanded ground sorting facility will be retrofitted with automated sorting systems and have twice the package processing capacity. The additional capacity is necessitated by area business growth and increasing customer needs in south Texas.

“UPS continuously invests in our integrated delivery network,” states Craig Wiltz, president of UPS’s Red River District. “Population and business growth throughout Texas are driving demand for our services and this facility expansion exemplifies one aspect of our ongoing approach to meeting that demand.”

The project will add capacity for more than 150 more delivery vehicles — called “package cars” — increasing the building’s delivery fleet to more than 340 delivery vehicles. UPS will also add 40 Class 8 compressed natural gas (CNG) tractors that will be fueled by a new on-site CNG fueling station. Each tractor will displace approximately 25,000 gallons of diesel fuel each year with natural gas.

The expansion will add about 171,000 square feet, bringing the building’s footprint to more than 330,000 square feet. The building sits on more than 40 acres of land and serves UPS customers in Bexar, Comal, Guadalupe, Wilson, Medina, and Kendall counties. The building’s team will continue to provide package pickup and delivery services during the project, which is expected to be complete mid-2017.

UPS Unveils Updated Hybrid Electric Fleet To Extend Range

LONG BEACH – UPS announced updates to 125 hybrid electric delivery trucks that extend their range and improve fuel economy as part of the company’s broader Rolling Laboratory approach.

A compact, quiet-running 2-cylinder engine replaces a prior 4-cylinder engine to extend the trucks' range, improve performance and fuel efficiency. The updated trucks deliver significant fuel economy equivalency gains — up to four times the fuel economy of a gasoline-powered vehicle. They will be deployed in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas later this year.

The updated E-GENTM chassis with the integrated 650 cc engine by Workhorse Group, Inc., a Cincinnati-based company, was announced by Carlton Rose, UPS's Global Fleet Maintenance and Engineering president, at the annual Advanced Clean Transportation Expo in Long Beach, Calif.

“These vehicles are a great example of the impact our Rolling Lab approach is having,” Rose said. “Our real-world testing of this new technology revealed opportunities to improve its performance and efficiency, which led to the development of a more advanced propulsion system.”

The trucks were purchased under UPS’s commitment to log 1 billion miles with alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles by the end of 2017.

ATLANTA – UPS recently announced plans to build an additional 12 compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations and add 380 new CNG tractors to its growing alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet. The CNG fueling stations and vehicle purchases totaling $100 million are part of UPS's ongoing commitment to diversify its fuel sources and reduce its environmental impact.

"At UPS, we own our fleet and our infrastructure. That allows us to invest for the long-term, rather than planning around near-term fluctuations in fuel pricing," said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president global engineering and sustainability. "CNG is part of a broad investment in a variety of alternative fuel vehicles. Taken together, all of our alternative fuel vehicles represent 6% of the more than 100,000 UPS global fleet, and have driven a 10% annual reduction in use of conventional fuel."

UPS is working to meet its goal of logging one billion miles with its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet by the end of 2017, using a Rolling Laboratory approach to determine the right alternative fuel solutions to meet the unique needs of route-specific driving environments.

The 12 new CNG stations will be built by TruStar Energy in Amarillo, Texas; Chattanooga, Tenn.; Columbia, S.C.; El Paso, Texas; Fort Worth, Texas; Kansas City, Kan.; Phoenix, Ariz.; Reno, Nev.; San Antonio, Texas; Tifton, Ga.; Trinidad, Colo., and Willow Grove, Pa. The new CNG tractors to be deployed in these cities will be manufactured by Kenworth. Agility and Quantum Fuel Systems will provide the CNG storage systems. This investment builds on the company's existing 18 CNG fueling stations in Alabama, California, Colorado, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia and operates CNG vehicles in Germany, the Netherlands and Thailand.

UPS Deploys 18 New Zero Emission Electric Trucks In Texas

ATLANTA – UPS announced the deployment of 18 electric, zero emission delivery vehicles to the Houston-Galveston area in Texas. The truck purchases are the result of a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), local governments and non-profits. These vehicles, designed and built specifically by the Workhorse Group for the “stop and go” needs of a UPS delivery truck, will avoid the consumption of an estimated 1.1 million gallons of diesel fuel over 20 years.

The DOE National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL) provided a grant toward the vehicles as part of an ongoing effort to improve air quality in the Houston-Galveston area. The region is currently designated as a National Ambient Air Quality Non-Attainment Area — a region where air pollution levels persistently exceed national air quality standards. Grants offset research and development costs necessary to design and build these prototype vehicles, with the goal being to further the development and eventually lower the cost of low or zero emission commercial vehicles.

The electric trucks operate with electric motors and rechargeable batteries that supply seamless acceleration and regenerative braking, creating a safe, highly efficient vehicle. Delivery of the vehicles began last month and will continue throughout the fall.

“Our goal is to deploy vehicles with the least environmental impact possible in each region, consistent with local regulations and economic conditions,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president global engineering and sustainability. “Support from the DOE, local governments and the non-profit Center for Transportation and the Environment (CTE) help us to accomplish this goal. We will continue to identify opportunities to drive innovation in our fleet and the marketplace.”

The initiative adds to UPS’s Rolling Laboratory, a fleet of more than 6,430 alternative fuel and advanced technology vehicles worldwide which includes 574 electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

The DOE grant is part of a Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC) partnership with CTE to accelerate the introduction and deployment of electric vehicles into the cargo transportation sector. The vehicles are being manufactured by Workhorse Group, Inc., a Cincinnati-based company which manufactures electric drive systems for commercial trucks and can equip them with electric engines.

“Meeting today’s complex clean air challenges requires public-private partnerships,” said Shelley Whitworth, transportation program manager, H-GAC. “These zero emission vehicles will help improve air quality in the Houston-Galveston area.”

“The Workhorse E-100 was designed and built to meet UPS’s daily duty cycle, with a range of up to 70 miles a day,” said Steve Burns, CEO of Workhorse Group Inc. “This UPS truck is designed from the ground up for local parcel delivery in high density, urban settings. UPS Expands Hybrid Electric Fleet

ATLANTA – UPS announced its purchase of 125 new technology hybrid electric (HEV) delivery trucks, as part of a broader program to deploy electric-powered vehicles with greater range and performance.

The new trucks will deliver significant fuel economy equivalency gains—up to four times the fuel economy of a gasoline powered vehicle, and will offer a 10% to 15% improvement over previous hybrid designs. The HEV trucks will be deployed in Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida the first half of 2016.

“These vehicles are a bridge to the delivery trucks of tomorrow,” said Mark Wallace, UPS senior vice president global engineering and sustainability. “This investment will help create and grow the market for ground-breaking alternative propulsion systems that reduce environmental impact, reduce operating costs, and save fuel.”

The HEV trucks were purchased under UPS’s commitment to utilize advanced technologies to reduce the environmental impact of its fleet. While the new electric vehicles will cost UPS slightly more than a similar truck with a conventional engine, the company’s sustainability commitment influenced the purchase decision. The vehicles are being manufactured by Workhorse Group, Inc., a Cincinnati-based company which manufactures electric drive systems for commercial trucks and can equip them with electric engines.

UPS to Build 15 Additional CNG Fueling Stations, Increase CNG Fleet

ATLANTA – UPS announced plans to build 15 compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations to support the purchase and planned deployment of 1,400 new CNG vehicles over the next year. Twelve of the CNG stations will be in new natural gas vehicle deployment areas, and three will replace existing CNG stations with more robust, higher capacity equipment.

This purchase represents a nearly 30% increase to UPS's current industry leading alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet of 5,088 vehicles worldwide. The CNG fueling stations and vehicle purchases are part of UPS' ongoing commitment to diversify its fuel sources, implement a fleet infrastructure that can utilize lower carbon intensity fuel sources and increase experience using alternative fuels in freight transport applications.

"UPS's investment in a large scale alternative energy fleet has enabled the company to avoid more than 34 million gallons of conventional fuels since 2000," said Mitch Nichols, UPS senior vice president of transportation and engineering. "Today's CNG announcement demonstrates UPS's plans to expand use of widely available natural gas. CNG is an important building block in our long-term fleet strategy and offers environmental and economic advantages."

When the deployments are completed, UPS anticipates its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet will continue to log more than 350 million miles per year, supporting the company's goal of driving one billion miles in this fleet by the end of 2017. This will displace approximately 54 million gallons of conventional diesel and gasoline annually while reducing total vehicle emissions. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the use of natural gas instead of gasoline cuts greenhouse gas emissions by 6-11% over the fuel life cycle.(1)

UPS plans to deploy new CNG vehicles in 15 cities. These cities include: Atlanta, Ga.; Charleston, W.Va.; Dallas, Texas; Denver, Colo.; Doraville, Ga.; Lenexa, Kan.; Lexington, Ky.; Montgomery, Ala.; New Orleans, La.; New Stanton, Pa.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Port Allen, La.; Shreveport, La.; Richmond, Va., and Roanoke, Va. Currently, UPS has a total of eight CNG fueling stations in California, Colorado, Georgia and Oklahoma and operates CNG vehicles in Germany, the Netherlands, and Thailand.
