CORWest: Supporting Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Along Rural Corridors in the Intermountain West

CORWest is a highly collaborative eight-state partnership working with Clean Cities networks and state agencies. The project designs and expands the existing alternative fuel corridors with electric charging in the Intermountain West, supports electric vehicle (EV) access into high-visitation areas throughout rural America, and offers regional transportation solutions to gateway communities through public/private partnerships. The objective of the project is to increase transportation efficiency and enable widespread access to affordable alternative fuels by supporting the EV market and deploying electric vehicle service equipment (EVSE) throughout the Intermountain West.

Microgrid Opportunities: Vehicles Enhancing Resiliency (MOVER)

The objective of the project is to demonstrate, refine, and disseminate a nationally replicable model for implementation of vehicle to grid optimization coupled with resilience and grid services for a community center and school. MOVER will complete an emerging technology analysis and field validation that combines zero emission electric school buses with solar photovoltaics (PV), energy storage, and microgrid technology to create a resilient, low-carbon energy system able to continually deliver grid services and trim emissions while providing backup energy during significant grid, weather, fire, or seismic events.

A Utility-Scale Plan for Accelerating the Deployment of Multi-Family Electric Vehicles Charging Infrastructure

The project will address the key barriers associated with the large-scale deployment of affordable electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for the multi-family housing (MFH) sector. A short-term goal is to work with a utility to create and test EV charging outreach and engagement strategies for communities with strong potential to install charging infrastructure, while prioritizing disadvantaged communities. Overall, the project aims to develop a plan to assist a utility company to assess the grid requirements to support 50% (~700,000 units) of all the multifamily units in its territory by 2035.

Demonstrating Electric Shuttles for the New Orleans Region

This project introduces nine electric shuttles to Tulane University’s shuttles and transportation services. University transportation services connect members of the university community with several campuses in the New Orleans area on scheduled routes and provide transportation for classes visiting community partners; students fulfilling service-learning commitments across the metropolitan area; and on-demand ride service. The project develops a new electric vehicle (EV) charging area in a university-owned parking lot to support the fleet transition.

This project aims to provide fleet operators in the region with a local example of the viability and value of EVs; and to share locally based information on EV infrastructure development, EV operation, and associated maintenance costs.

Electric Vehicle Smart Program Management: Supporting Local Governments to Achieve Equitable Access to Electric Mobility

The Electric Vehicle Smart program will assist local governments in setting and achieving their EV readiness goals as well as promoting equitable access to electric mobility. Four overarching project objectives drive the Recipient’s approach to maximize program impact:1. Facilitate technical assistance (TA) and designation of at least 60 EV Smart communities. 2. Prioritize key objectives identified in the Justice 40 Initiative by developing tools to support equitable access to EVs and EV charging.3. Collaboratively work with four Clean Cities Coalitions (CCCs) to provide TA across communities in Virginia, Colorado, north Texas, southern California, and continuation of Great Plain’s Institute’s (GPI) pilots in Michigan, Ohio, & Minnesota, and Metropolitan Mayor’s Caucus’ (MMC) work in the Chicago area. 4. Develop and test an EV Smart Infrastructure Modeling Tool to enable local leaders and planning agencies to quickly and easily develop a sense of the EV charging infrastructure demand based on anticipated levels of EV adoption.

Heavy-Duty Electric Vehicle Demonstrations for Freight and Mobility Solutions

While adoption of light-duty electric vehicles (EVs) has increased and more models have become commercially available, medium-duty (MD) and heavy-duty (HD) EVs have not seen the same widespread success. MD and HD EVs offer tremendous potential economic benefits to fleets and wider energy and environmental benefits to communities. This project confronts that disparity to highlight the importance and uses of MD and HD EVs. Clean Fuels Ohio designed this project to prove the operational and financial effectiveness of MD and HD EVs in fleets and communities that had not previously used this technology. Through diverse partnerships, the project utilizes commercially available EVs, electric vehicle supply equipment, facilities, and app platforms to ensure seamless technology deployment and showcase significant return on investment. As part of this project, Clean Fuels Ohio and partners operate three demonstration projects of MD and HD EVs with the goal of leading to Class 4–8 EV adoption in various fleet applications across the country.

Internal Combustion Engine Mechanics Introduction to Electric Vehicle Repair: A National Franchise Training Model for Diversifying the Expertise of Today's Auto Technician

The objective of this project is to develop and conduct a pilot launch of a nationwide network of public institutions for higher education (IHEs) and career and technical education institutions (CTEs) that will provide a sustainable, standardized, hybrid online/in-person training. The training will focus on electric vehicle (EV) maintenance for the current automotive technician workforce that work outside Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) dealership networks and/or those workers seeking to transition from legacy energy and transportation jobs to new green energy jobs. Upon completion of the training, the participant will be prepared to take a hybrid/EV specialist test, such as the L3 administered by the ASE Education Foundation of the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). The project will incorporate equity considerations to ensure inclusiveness that embraces traditionally underserved and marginalized communities in alignment with the Department of Energy’s Justice40 initiatives. The goal is a “one-stop-shop” where individual technicians or small groups of technicians such as in fleet maintenance are seeking EV training within easy geographic reach of their employers.

Northwest Electric Showcase Project (Drive Oregon)

Through the Northwest Electric Showcase Project, Forth aimed to double the plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) adoption rates in the Pacific Northwest by 2019 through physical, ‘pop up,’ and virtual online PEV showcases. These showcases were a brand-neutral and sales-free environment that featured ride and drive opportunities which aimed to significantly increase PEV sales. Forth acquired eight different EV models that were used for the ride and drives.

The largest showcase was the semi-permanent “Go Forth Electric Showcase” room in downtown Portland. This room displayed multiple PEV charging stations to view and handle, interactive displays and surveys, educational materials, and the ability to test drive a PEV through a ride and drive experience. Forth also partnered with local organizations to host over 60 mobile showcases at workplaces and community events throughout Oregon and Washington. As of 2019, Forth facilitated over 1,600 test drives and hosted over 6,00 visitors to their showcases.
