Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions
For more than 25 years, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has sponsored Advanced Vehicle Technology Competitions (AVTCs) in partnership with the North American auto industry. Managed by Argonne National Laboratory, AVTCs represent a unique coalition of government, industry and academic partners who join forces to explore sustainable vehicle solutions. DOE sponsors these competitions to educate the next generation of automotive engineers and accelerate the development and demonstration of technologies of interest to DOE and the automotive industry. EcoCAR is the latest DOE AVTC series and is North America's premier collegiate automotive engineering competition. As part of EcoCAR 3, which officially kicked off in Fall 2014, DOE and General Motors challenged 16 North American universities to redesign a Chevrolet Camaro into a hybrid-electric car that will reduce environmental impact while maintaining the muscle and performance expected from this iconic American car.
While the model is the most technologically advanced Camaro in the vehicle's history, EcoCAR 3 teams are tasked to incorporate innovative ideas, solve complex engineering challenges, and apply the latest cutting-edge technologies. Teams have four years (2014–2018) to harness those ideas into energy to meet engineering, environmental, and economic goals. The Camaro will keep its iconic body design while student teams develop and implement eco-power and performance under the hood, retain safety, and meet high consumer standards. The teams will also focus on developing technology that will lower emissions by incorporating alternative fuels.

EcoCAR 2: Plugging In to the Future
EcoCAR 2 was a unique three-year engineering competition that challenged 15 universities across North America to reduce the environmental impact of a 2013 Chevrolet Malibu without compromising performance, safety, or consumer acceptability.
Each university team was also responsible for communication and outreach activities. Students coordinated outreach through education, marketing, and media relations to build awareness of advanced vehicle technologies by educating the public about electric, hybrid electric, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Clean Cities coalitions supported their local teams by helping student outreach coordinators.
