Mississippi National River and Recreation Area

The Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (MNRRA) protects a 72-mile, 54,000-acre corridor along one of the world's great rivers. Regional park and trail destinations within MNRRA are accessible to over 33 million annual visitors to the greater Twin Cities area. In 2013, the Twin Cities Clean Cities coalition worked with the park to install 12 electric vehicle charging stations at 11 MNRRA sites, helping to reduce emissions and educate park visitors about alternative transportation options.

Multimodal/Drone Delivery Demonstration to Disadvantaged Communities and Mobility Challenged Populations

The objective of the project is to test and evaluate delivering supplies to mobility-impaired, historically disadvantaged, or individuals without reliable means of transportation using low- or zero-emission autonomous transportation modes. The Recipient will partner with a local food bank to utilize “A/B” testing – measuring the number of emissions from current delivery operations against the use of a multimodal low or zero-emissions solution. It is anticipated the use of this multimodal system, once scaled, will reduce the number of vehicle miles traveled, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide overall efficiencies to the delivery system and the transportation system in the project area.

The objective of this project is to develop a Multi-Unit Dwelling and Curbside Residential Charging Toolkit including all necessary information (e.g., technical considerations, business case, sample agreements, and sample policies) to evaluate and implement innovative, cost-effective, and flexibly-expandable charging solutions that will enhance residential MUD and curbside plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) charging systems to attract and retain customers. Project results and the Toolkit will be broadly disseminated to ensure a meaningful and lasting market impact.

National Mall and Memorial Parks

The National Mall and Memorial Parks has been a must-see stop in the nation’s capital for hundreds of millions of visitors throughout the mall’s 200-year history. In 2013, the Greater Washington Region Clean Cities coalition teamed with the National Mall in an effort to modernize its high-profile fleet and acquire two plug-in electric vehicles, four electric vehicle charging stations (two for public use), and idle-reduction technologies. The mall also partnered with the Propane Education and Research Council to deploy seven propane-powered mowers.

Nationwide AFV Emergency Responder, Recovery, Reconstruction & Investigation Training

The Nationwide AFV Emergency Responder, Recovery, Reconstruction & Investigation Training project will create new curricula as well as update existing materials created by the National Fire Protection Association on alternative fuel and plug-in electric vehicles. Building on an already successful resource, the project will expand existing training to encompass all alternative fuel vehicles, which it does not currently. The training will provide resources to the spectrum of responder and investigation operations that would be involved in a vehicle accident, including fire department, law, emergency medical service, fire investigator, recovery & reconstruction, and tow and salvage personnel. The NFPA will create materials that will be nationally-available and customized for each audience, including online resources, Train-the-Trainer classroom programs, videos and on-scene reference materials.

New Jersey Compressed Natural Gas Refuse Trucks, Shuttle Buses and Infrastructure

The New Jersey Compressed Natural Gas Refuse Trucks, Shuttle Buses, and Infrastructure Project was the first state-wide alternative fuel vehicle deployment program in New Jersey. The project deployed more than 300 natural gas refuse haulers and shuttle buses belonging to 15 public and private fleets, and six new compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling stations throughout the state, including: Newark, Camden, Trenton, Morris County, and Egg Harbor Township. The initiative also included activities to educate the public and other fleets about the benefits of using clean burning, domestically produced natural gas in vehicles.
